First Row: Harriet "Hattie" Thompson Jackson (1848-1924)

Notes: Daughter of William & Permelia Thompson who arrived in Jackson County Nov. 1852. William staked a DLC homestead claim around the confluence of a creek and "Applegate Creek,' built a log house, made pickles and planted 2.5 acres of potatoes, planning to make his fortune by selling goods to prospectors. All was burned and routed in September 1853 in the first phase of the Rogue River War. There is no evidence that Hattie ever lived in Applegate Valley (she and her mother more sensibly stayed in Jacksonville?), or that William returned after 1853. It appears he was a participant in the fighting in 1854-55 and died in 1856 of related complications. Hattie married dentist Dr. Will Jackson in 1871. Their home is now The Miners' Bazaar, his adjacent office the Quady North wine tasting room.
