Notes: "This house, constructed during the late 1870's, has undergone various remodelings in a Colonial Revival motif. The building has one-over-one, double hung sash windows, shiplap siding, and a pedimented front porch on the north elevation. Several of the windows, on the side and rear elevations, have triangular lintel trim. The building's plan is "T" shaped and an exterior chimney is located on the east elevation. John Thorpe Layton was born in Lincolnshire, England. He emigrated to Oregon in 1851, arriving in the Applegate Valley in 1852. He was involved in mining and owned the Faris Gulch (Layton) Mines. Layton purchased this land around 1877, and constructed a large frame residence. He built and operated a general merchandise store and a post office across the road. He married Mary Nail in 1856. They had two daughters. His second marriage, to Harriet Doak, ended in divorce. His third marriage was to Theresa Moore in 1871.
