Notes: Born and raised on Squaw Creek. John earned a B.S. degree from the University of Oregon in 1941, and came home to spend the summer as a fire lookout, expecting to return to UofO for graduate studies. Instead, two days after Pearl Harbor was bombed, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was a combat pilot, flew the Flying Fortress, and was reported missing after a bombing run over Germany in December 1943. He was imprisoned in Stalag Luft No. 1 for 17.5 months, and returned to Jackson County to work as a high school teacher and serve as a civic leader.
