Notes: Born in Nord Pas-de-Calais, France on August 24, 1832, of English parents. Immigrated to the United States between 1844-50 (available information is in conflict, particularly the obituaries of brothers Thomas & George). Brought his violin on the wagon train and was a popular fiddle player in the Applegate. Volunteered to serve in the 1st Oregon Infantry 1864-67. Married Mary Jane Darneille Zumwalt on November 11, 1867 in Missouri Flat. James died on April 6, 1917 at Thompson Creek.
