Year: 1889
First Row: Samuel Huston Cook (1839-1909) on the right.
Source: Peter Britt collection, SOU Hannon Library
Notes: The SOU Hannon Library index says this portrait shows "Cook brothers (3), one in cowboy clothes with shotgun." We think that Samuel is on the right, based on other portraits known to be of him. Samuel arrived in the Applegate in the early 1870s. Samuel had six brothers: - Andrew (1827-1892) was a blacksmith and lived on Samuel's farm; perhaps he is on the left. - Robert Alexander (1833-1902) was first to come to Oregon, where married Elmira Ann Wooldridge on Feb. 20, 1853. They first lived in Lane County, arriving in Jackson County by 1860. - William Sloan (1834-1903) married in Texas, and was farming at Willow Springs by 1880. - James Morton (b. 1836) died in 1888, thus is not a candidate. - John McConnell Cook Jr. (1844-1915) first lived in Napa County, but arrived in Jacksonville by July 24, 1887, the birth date of son William. - Thomas Benton (1850-81) too is not a candidate. So which 3 Cook brothers are in the 1889 portrait by Peter Britt?
