Residents of Williams organized to fund and build a "free bridge" to avoid the crossing a couple of miles downstream on the Jacksonville-Crescent City toll wagon road. Jackson County selected Thomas Mee to replace the structure with a covered bridge in 1873; his bid was $1,550.
